What is the IGCSE Curriculum and its Benefits?
As a parent, choosing the right academic pathway is one of the most crucial decisions that will shape your child’s life. At Bedford School, Mohali, India’s first British international girls’ boarding and day school, we believe that education is more than just cultivating knowledge.
Albert Einstein once said, “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” It should nurture character, resilience and confidence in a child to engage with the world around them.
The Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) curriculum equips the child with skills, a mindset and a global perspective that are essential to excel in this interconnected world.
In this blog, we are going to discuss in detail the IGCSE curriculum and how it can help your child. Let us proceed.
Understanding the IGCSE Curriculum
The Cambridge IGCSE is a globally recognised curriculum for pupils aged between 14 and 16 years. There is a diverse range of subjects that the curriculum offers, which aim to develop curiosity and creativity within them.
Languages, science, humanities, mathematics, technology and arts; pupils can explore their interests, developing critical thinking and knowledge along the way.
Core Principles of the IGCSE Curriculum
The core principles that the IGCSE curriculum aims to follow are:
- Curiosity-Based Learning: Here, pupils are encouraged to engage in research, analysis and problem-solving skills that develop independent thought and confidence in them.
- Assessment Diversity: Through written examinations, practical assessments, project work and oral tasks, every pupil gets the opportunity to demonstrate their strengths across various learning styles.
- Global Perspective: The IGCSE curriculum focuses on incorporating international case studies and contexts. Hence, it prepares the child to engage with global opportunities and challenges.
Diverse Range of Subjects
The pupil can select 7 to 9 subjects where they need to balance the compulsory areas such as English, Mathematics and Science with options in languages, humanities, arts and technology. With this, they can follow their passions and shape their paths as per their interests and future aspirations.
Benefits of the IGCSE Curriculum
The curriculum is renowned and credited for delivering both academic excellence and the overall development of the child. It benefits your child in the following ways:
Developing Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills
The IGCSE curriculum is not just about rote learning. Here, the child learns to analyse information in detail. With this, they come across different perspectives about the same topic and hence present a well-rounded argument.
For example, through a global perspectives project, the child might research climate change policies of different countries. She will develop the skill of evaluating the impact and even present recommendations. In this manner, both the analytical thinking and communication skills of the child are being developed.
Confidence in the Subject
Now imagine your child getting the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a science practical or a design technology project. Don’t you think that she will gain more confidence in any subject by practising it rather than just reading about it?
The IGCSE curriculum benefits the child in this aspect. With equal attention to theory and practical classes, the child develops confidence in the subject and their classroom learning is also complemented.
Preparing for Global Opportunities
One of the greatest advantages of IGCSE qualifications is that it is recognised by top universities and employers around the globe. There will be a lot of doors that will be opened for your child and they will have a successful transition to higher studies and global opportunities.
At Bedford School Mohali, we also have a college placement cell that will help every pupil to explore higher study options from different perspectives. This will eventually help them reach a place that is best suited for them.
Encouragement to Learn Independently
With constant encouragement to learn independently through projects, research assignments and self-directed study, the pupil will develop this essential skill.
For example, at our boarding school for girls, a pupil takes up the opportunity for independent research in History or Business Studies. As a result, not only will her knowledge grow, but she will learn to manage her time, structure her thoughts and work independently.
Opportunities to Work on Strengths
There are different assessments and learning opportunities in the IGCSE curriculum. Hence, each pupil has the opportunity to explore and excel in areas in which they are strong.
Every child feels valued when they get to showcase their talents and work towards becoming their best versions. Someone shines in presentations, while others perform their best in creative arts or STEM practicals.
How We Have Designed Our Curriculum
At Bedford School Mohali, we follow a progressive approach in our academic curriculum, preparing pupils for IGCSE from pre-prep through upper school.
Pre-Prep and Prep School (Nursery to Year 6)
In the early years, pupils develop curiosity, social and emotional skills, communication and motor abilities through the EYFS curriculum. In the Prep years, the English National Curriculum is followed, which builds foundational knowledge in English, Maths, Sciences, Languages, Art and Technology.
Upper School (Years 7 to 11)
The foundational years are built on Prep School skills, where we introduce foreign languages and the pupils strengthen core subjects too.
During the IGCSE years, pupils can select 7-9 subjects, including compulsory English, Maths and Science. With this, they can select a combination of languages, humanities and arts.
